Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in Massachusetts

Cravings are one of the hardest parts of early recovery. Willpower alone won’t keep you sober, especially when your brain is still healing. That’s why Northstar Recovery Center offers evidence-based, medication-assisted treatment in Massachusetts to help ease the physical and psychological pull of addiction while you focus on building a healthier life.

Whether you’re struggling with opioids, alcohol, or another substance, MAT can reduce relapse risk, improve retention in treatment, and make recovery more manageable. Contact us today to learn more about MAT in Massachusetts.

What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapy to treat substance use disorders (SUD). MAT is not a shortcut or replacement for recovery. It’s a proven tool that helps stabilize the brain and body so that people can fully engage in treatment.

At Northstar, MAT is offered as part of a holistic recovery plan, tailored to your individual circumstances. We don’t just prescribe and send you on your way. You’ll receive clinical guidance, therapy, and peer support in a compassionate, structured environment.

Our MAT Program Services

Medications We Use at Our MAT Programs in Massachusetts

We are dedicated to providing comprehensive, effective, and safe MAT programs in Massachusetts. Our clinical team and psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP) carefully evaluate each person to determine the safest and most effective medication-assisted treatment for their recovery goals.

Every person’s journey is different. Some may use medication short-term to get through a rough patch. Others benefit from long-term support. We’ll help you make the right choice for your situation.

Common options include:

  • Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone): Reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms for people recovering from opioid use disorder. While we don’t provide Suboxone at our facility, we can provide a prescription when needed.
  • Vivitrol (naltrexone): A once-monthly injection used to block the euphoric effects of opioids or alcohol and reduce relapse risk. Our PNP administers Vivitrol on site for those who will benefit from it.
  • Naltrexone (oral): A daily pill that can help prevent alcohol or opioid use by blocking receptors in the brain.
  • Acamprosate (Campral): Used to support alcohol recovery by reducing post-acute withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and insomnia.
  • Disulfiram (Antabuse): A deterrent medication that makes people feel severely ill if they consume alcohol.
